The photograph is of one of the sluice gates controlling the flow of the culverted Worsley Brook that runs under Worsley Green(it used to be on the surface until approximately 1900. The Brook passes under the canal at the side of what is known as The Granary(it was built as a forge in 1758) and then runs parallel to Barton Road going south until it meets the Manchester Ship Canal, there is another sluice gate on the other side of the canal directly opposite the Bridgewater Hotel. Several years ago there was a television programme that followed the route underground wearing waders and they entered at the sluice shown and walked under the canal and into the open and then walked back. It is fully accessable to anyone wishing to repeat the walk from the Barton Road opening. |

Further to my original note, the flow of water was controlled by this sluice so that a head of water could be built up to power the overshot water wheel that powered part of the draught equipment in the forge and also to power the water wheel at the lime and mortar mill a few yards away, the structure is known as the Lime Kiln. |
